Drought-resistant plants, for those who don't want to water so often

Cacti

• Maybe the most obvious choice and as hot and popular as it is, there are many varieties, both large and small, to choose from. Cacti thrive in windows with both sun and shade or a bit further into the room.

Emerald Palm (wardrobe flower)

• Green and sturdy make the wardrobe flower a classic. As the name suggests, it can also thrive in low light.

Crassula or paradise tree in various varieties

• A collection of succulent houseplants with thick, green leaves that can survive for long periods without being watered by storing liquid in their leaves. They come in large pots for pedestals or wide window nooks as well as smaller ones that look lovely grouped on tables or in windows.

Japanese sago palm

• Cool ancient plant with stiff green palm-like leaves. Thrives well inside, preferably in cooler temperatures during winter. The plant is toxic if ingested.

Aloe vera

• Popular medicinal plant with lanceolate, toothed leaves. Available as both a miniature plant for the collector's shelf and larger for the windowsill.
